New York Times Features at Exclusive Webinar

Alice Ting, who heads licensing at New York Times, was the main publisher voice at a joint PDLN, FIBEP and AMEC webinar on exclusive MMO - publisher agreements, attended by over 70 MMOs, publishers and licensing bodies on May 7th. Christophe Dickes presented the MMO concerns, triggered by recent publisher deals in Netherlands with LexisNexis, and his preference for CMO (or PDLN) licensing models.

Alice set out the NYT approach, and the context of MMO licensing for a leading global publisher. This includes the expectation of premium pricing for premium content, and she noted the limited resources that can be applied to MMO channel management. Taken together these can make exclusives an attractive option.

Sandra Chastanet of CFC spoke for the value of CMOs in creating effective monetisation models for publishers, distinguishing direct publisher licensing (eg FT) from true exclusives. MMOs spoke on how the Dutch developments were damaging business, with Andrew Hughes (PDLN) noting that the failure of some MMOs to support the CLIP initiative may have created a favourable environment for less attractive exclusive models.
